4° (192 x 142mm). Collation: [a]4-q4 r6 (- r6). Title with Luther's woodcut portrait attributed to Lucas Cranach. (Lacking final leaf possibly with printer's device on recto and blank verso, title torn with loss and repaired, a2-a4 shorter, a2 repaired at inner margin, final leaf repaired, occasional soiling.) Modern brown calf. Provenance: early 19th-c.? handwritten German annotations on early endpaper.
RARE EARLY EDITION OF THIS KEY LUTHER TRACT (PMM 49). First published the same year in Latin and shortly after translated by Thomas Murner, the present work attacks the sacramental system of the Church. It is the second of 'three revolutionary tracts' which 'made [Luther's] position clear to himself and to the world at large. Religion was now seen to be on the side of a movement for liberty... The three great tracts summed up all the grievances of the reformer and set forth all his proposals for reform' (PMM 49). Benzing 714; Kind 162; not in Adams or Davies Murray German and no copy in ABPC for the last 30 years.
