OVERBEEK, Bonaventura van (1660-1706). Stampe degli avanzi dell' antica Roma opra. London: [Edlin], 1739.

2° (521 x 380 mm). Engraved title vignette, portrait, folding map and 148 plates after Overbeek retouched by Jacopo Amigoni, including one double page of the Colosseum. (Possibly lacking the last leaf - the index of plates, occasional slight staining.) 19th-century mottled calf, covers with gilt arms in centre, spine gilt with title label (rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance: Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme, probably Henry Pelham, 4th Duke (1785-1851; binding and bookplate).

FRESH COPY WITH A NOBLE PROVENANCE of the first Italian edition of Reliquiae antiquae urbis Romae, first published in Amsterdam in 1708. The fine engravings are reversed copies of Overbeek's (or Overbeke) plates, reworked by Amigoni (or Amiconi), whose works 'jouirent d'une grande renommée' (Bénézit 1976 ed. I, p.159). They originally accompanied the 8° text volume Degli avanzi dell' antica Roma translated by Paolo Rolli but the two are rarely found together. Avery Lib. p.740 (imperfect); Berlin Kat. 1873 (imperfect); British Arch. Lib. 2347 (under the 1763 French edition); Brunet IV, 264: 'ouvrage estimé pour l'exactitude des dessins'; Cicognara 3806. OVERBEEK, Bonaventura van
