II: 77 unnumbered leaves (the collation agrees with Wood although Nissen and Zimmer call for 79 ll.). 106 coloured half tone plates in vol, II, 167 illustrations in vol. I. Contemporary red half morocco, gilt lettered spine in six compartments, gilt edges, original wrappers bound in (corners bumped). Provenance: C.S.Ascherson (d. 1945) (two bookplates, one with pencil note including the date of purchase in parts 1905-1910, and the date of binding, [January] 1913).
Originally published in 24 parts, the first in August 1905 and the last two in November 1910, this classic work is a detailed account of 'the nesting habits and breeding ranges of European birds with half-tones of the nests and nesting sites; also coloured figures of the eggs ad naturam' (Wood).
