The present lot belongs to the so called 'Van Goyenesque' group of paintings by the artist, all executed in the early fourties, and of which the main characteristics are the atmospheric handling of the sky and the silvery and ochre tones. The present picture, exceptionally well preserved, is to be compared with the painting of a riverscene with two men conversing in the Museum at Dordrecht (S. Reiss, op.cit., p. 41, no. 13). Reiss dates both this painting as the present lot to circa 1641. Alan Chong in a letter of 7 March 1995 prefers a slightly later date towards 1642, comparing the handling of the cattle with that in the picture which was with L. Koetser in 1972. He has also observed that the shepherd is almost identical to the one in the picture which was offered at Christie's London, 29 November 1975, lot 89
