Lot Essay

Including: PEGGY BACON, The Promenade Deck; ERNEST HASKELL, The Sentinels of North Creek; EDWARD HOPPER, Night Shadows (L. pl.82); JOHN MARIN, Downtown, the El (Z. 134); HAYES MILLER, Play and JOHN SLOAN, The Bandit's Cave (M. 195).

The Marin etching originally included in this set, Brooklyn Bridge (No. 6, Swaying) (Z. 112) was replaced by Downtown, the El after the plate was damaged early on. The change was indicated on the front label in ink by crossing out 'Brooklyn Bridge' and substituting 'Lower Manhattan'.
