Lot Essay

Marlier lists a version of this composition in the collection Thesing, Hamburg but was incorrect in stating that it was exhibited at the De Boer, Amsterdan, in 1934. Comparing the photographs of the present picture with that of the collection Thesing in the R.K.D., it seems that the latter may be by a follower. The meaning of the proverb has not been established.
