The present lot depicts the industrial activity which developed chiefly in the valley of the Meuse in the sixteenth century. It depicts an iron ore basin, a blast furnace and foundry. Bars of steel were transported throughout Europe on the river network. Earlier depicted by Patinier and Herrie met de Bles, the iron foundries were several times depicted by Lucas van Valkenborch who as a Protestant had fled from Malines to Liège in 1562; six depictions of the theme are known by his older brother Martin (including details in the depictions of the Tower of Babel). None of the sites in the latter's pictures have been identified. They all date from after 1600 when the artist had settled in Frankfurt.
