Lot Essay

The present lot is one of three church interiors, considered by Marijke de Kinkelder as being by the same hand; the others being offered at Neumeister, Munich, 2 November 1988, lot 369, as Johan Velens and at Sotheby's Amsterdam, 22 May 1989, lot 71, with ill. The artist has not yet been identified but on the basis of the indistinct signature L.V..Linge on the interior offered at Sotheby's Amsterdam in 1989, de Kinkelder tentatively identifies him as Andries Pietersz. van der Linde, mentioned by Obreen as a clergyman who became a member, registered as a painter, of the Guild of Saint Luke in Delft in 1631 (Fr.D.O. Obreen, Archief voor Nederlandsche Kunstgeschiedenis etc, I, 1877/78, pp. 6 and 27)
