Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
In original wooden case
Romanée-Conti(1)
"Vibrant, pure, spicy and concentrated to the point of almost painful intensity with its super ripe, palate staining flavors yet this remains regal, almost aloof and quite reserved. The focus in unbelievable and while it's hard to speak of subtle power, one can sense the vibrancy and depths of reserve that are only hinted at now. This is every bit as good as the La Tbche but a completely different expression. It is also the longest of any of these wines and the finish lasts literally for minutes; I could still taste it the next day. Between this and the La Tache, I could only shake my head in awe." BH , October, 9, 2003
La Tâche(3)
Everything that I saw from cask made it into bottle intact and words remain inadequate to describe just how good this wine is. Classic La Tache in every respect with its incredibly pure, marvelously intense oriental spice box nose, flavors of hoisin and pure pinot extract of indescribable complexity and length. The big tannins are completely wrapped in velvet and the finish simply does not quit. Destined to become one of the all time great vintages of La Tache.
Richebourg(1)
"Practically black with a supersaturated multidimensional nose of black cherries, spice and trace of new oak. Bigger and larger scaled than the RSV and much more linear and direct, it is the richest, most robust wine in this lineup with decidedly muscular tannins. The flavor profile is somewhat austere yet the length is phenomenal and this could be the longest lived wine among these in '99. This has as much potential as any DRC Richebourg I've ever had." BH , October, 9, 2003.
Romanée-Saint-Vivant(2)
"More expressive still with remarkably dense aromas of classic Vosne spice and crushed blackberries, full-bodied, very sappy flavors with a terrific inner core of complexity and still more spice. The purity of extract displayed here is mind bending. Unquestionably the finest DRC Romanie St.-Vivant in many a vintage and this vintage would appear to support the Domaine's contention that all the vineyard work they've done is paying off. This is a great vintage for this wine." BH , January 28, 2005.
Grands Echézeaux(2)
"I have now tasted the '99 GE some 6 times since my original review in Issue 5 and it continues to improve, indeed to the point that I have raised my score modestly. There is still a touch of new oak framing the penetrating red and blackberry fruits, vanilla and oriental spice aromas and it continues onto the beautifully detailed and quite robust flavors that deliver excellent precision. This is a big wine with richness, superb length and impressive refinement and it's clear that this will live for decades. In sum, this is very classy juice." BH , July 1, 2006.
Echézeaux(3)
"Explosive fruit of blackberries, vanilla and oriental spice with extremely ripe, relatively supple black fruit, round, sexy flavors underpinned by good structure, ripe tannins and fine acid/fruit balance. This is still very tight but there is good vigor, indeed even force behind this wine. One of the better DRC Echézeaux in a long time, in fact as good as the terrific '88 though stylistically different." BH , January 30, 2003.
