LA CHAPELLE

As the hill of Hermitage crowns the splendid vineyards of the Northern Rhone, the poetry of a little lone chapel cresting this crown gives this seminal Hermitage its moniker, though Jaboulet's vineyards themselves lie some distance away. La Chapelle's elegance, leather and ethereal smoke borders on incense. Not as heavy or as extracted, spending lesser time in oak, the wines are nonetheless intense. There is perhaps no better match with a rack of lamb. The 1961, 1978 and 1990 are all three of the greatest wines of the last century. The choice is simply a matter of preference as to how mature one likes to savor great reds.

Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1978
Rhône, Jaboulet
Levels: 2.5cm or better
In original wooden case
"Opaque plum/garnet-colored, with a fabulously sweet, youthful bouquet of licorice, incense, smoked meats, pepper, and blackberry/cassis fruit, the full-bodied 1978 La Chapelle is extremely young with astonishing vigor, velvety tannin, and a full-bodied, multi-dimensional, layered personality. The finish lasts for over 60 seconds. Remarkably fresh and not yet fully mature, the super-concentrated 1978 should continue to age well for another three decades. Anticipated maturity: now-2030" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #129 (June 2000)
