the first a cross-section of three-core tarred-hemp insulated 1 7/8in. cable, cased in brass and stamped on the side with B. I., flanking central stamp of Brunel's mark; and two further samples of single radial-core 5/8in. cables, cased in turned brass, each with capped finials and exposed outer helical steel earth, cables circa 1865 (5)

Lot Essay

Brunel's masterpiece, The Great Eastern, was regarded as a passenger ship failure after its launch in 1858. It was purchased by a Greenwich-based cable laying company in 1865 and it went on to lay successful long cable-runs, using cables of these diameters
