Lot Essay

The Gramophone Company Ltd. became The Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd. at the end of 1900, just when extra models such as the No 6 were being added to the basic Trade Mark range. The use of the old name indicates that the cabinetwork of this example, at least, was made before the change. However, the apparently deliberate erasing of the Maiden Lane address suggests that it was not sold until after the move to City Road, early in 1902.
