Lot Essay

(Lottery-tickets of the National Exhibition of Women Labour for 50 Cents available at the terrain. First prize a piece of jewellery worth DFL 1000,-). The image depicts the victory of Labour over the Sphinx that embodies the evil force of Sensuality oppressing women. The women on the left have surmounted Sensuality - the worried looking women on the right are still in the power of prostitution. The model for the central figure was Marguérite Elfrich, also depicted by Toorop in his etching Vrouwekop (1897).
