Lot Essay

With its discrete mouldings and sober pilasters, this meuble à deux corps illustrates the transition between the medieval furniture -which is often slightly over-decorated with sculptures- and the 17th century furniture which is inspired by the oeuvre of the engravers. The biggest French city at that time, LYon was a center for the Arts and especially for furniture-making.
A related meuble à deux corps is illustrated in J. Boccador, Le Mobilier Français du Moyen Age à la Renaissance, Saint Rémy en l'Eau, 1988, p.138. Another one is illustrated in E. Mannono, Mobilier Régional. Ile-de-France., Paris, 1998, p.26.
