Lot Essay

With its superbly-carved giltwood cresting centered by a mask within scrolls, this mirror is a fine example of Genoese carved furniture of the early 1700s. The frame itself consists entirely of ripple-mouldings and recalls and earlier phase of furniture-making inspired by Netherlandish prototypes. A related mirror is in the Palazzo Spinola in Genoa and is illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Mobile in Liguria, Genoa, 1996, p. 108, fig. 129.
