Lot Essay

With its distinctive shape and carved decoration, this commode relates to the oeuvre of Pierre Hache (1705-1776). He was a member of the most well-known dynasty of cabinet-makers outside of Paris in the 18th Century. They were established in the Alps, in Grenoble.
The son of Thomas Hache (1664-1747), Pierre Hache succeeded his father as cabinet-maker of Monseigneur le Duc d'Orléans.
A closely related commode, displaying similar ormolu mounts, is illustrated in P. and F. Rouge, Le génie des Hache, Dijon, 2005, p.274; it is stamped 'Hache à Grenoble'.
