Lot Essay

With its dark and rich patina, this splendid credenza is a particularly fine example of North Italian furniture-making which is generally associated with Tuscany. This example is embellished with delicate and sparse carving to the doors, and has a slender band of drawers to the frieze. It relates to an example decorated with the arms of the Monticola family from Verona, which was formerly in the collection of William Randolph Hearst and was subsequently sold by the Detroit Museum of Arts, Christie's, New York, 31 March 2000, lot 88.
