Of oval form the plant holder with everted lip and decorated with lozenge-flowered trellis, on turned tapering legs joined by a concave-sided undertier, with bulb feet, the decoration largely 19th century and following the original pattern, with traces of original decoration

This green and white-painted flower jardinière, decorated with flowered-lozenge trellis in celebration of Rome's Temple of Venus, relates to painted furniture supplied by the St Martin's Lane cabinet-maker Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779). Chippendale invoiced Edwin Lascelles, of Harewood House, Yorkshire, on 7 June 1777 for '2 Large Circular Stools, the feet very neatly Japanned Green and White' at a cost of £3.18.0. One of this pair of stools may have been that sold by The Rt. Hon. The Earl of Harewood, K.B.E., Harewood House, Leeds, Yorkshire; Christie's sale on the premises, 3 October 1988, lot 172. Chippendale also supplied '8 Painted armed chairs covered with needlework 2 stools to suit the Do...'. Other sets of white and green japanned furniture by Thomas Chippendale include a set supplied to Ninian Home for Paxton House, Berwickshire in 1774 (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. I, p. 274, vol. II, p. 100, figs. 164-6).
