The cane-backed and squab-cushioned library bergere is designed in the robust early 19th century fashion that combines the Grecian with the Louis Quatorze fashion; and was popularised by T. King's, The Cabinet-Maker's Sketch Book, 1835; and Original Designs for Chairs and Sofas. Roman acanthus wraps the volute scrolls of the cresting and Grecian 'cippus' arms, which are further enriched with Apollo's palms and these also flower the columnar feet. Amongst related furnishings are the seat furniture supplied by Messrs. Banting, France & Co. in 1821 for Frederick William Hervey, 5th Earl and 1st Marquess of Bristol (1769-1859) at No. 6, St. James Square (J. Shurmer, Ickworth, 1998, p.12).
