This table can be firmly attributed to the workshop of Giles Grendey on account of the distinctive design of the upper section of its legs: The curved C-scroll heading the leg and entering the frieze section closely follows the design for a pair of library armchairs by Giles Grendey, sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 4 July 2002, lot 20. These chairs are similar to a suite of chairs by Grendey at Gunton Park, Norfolk (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, London, 1996, p. 243, fig. 437). Both sets of chairs are stamped 'WB' and this stamp probably relates to William House, employed at Grendey's Clerkenwell workshop Grendey's Clerkenwell workshop from 14 April 1747 (G. Beard and C. Gilbert, eds., Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1986, pp.371-2).
A further link between the current table and the Grendey workshop is its scrolled feet which are replicated on a larger scale in the Gunton Park suite.
