Lot Essay
The table, with inlaid tablet on fine Pompeian pillars in the George III antique fashion, would have served in the 1770's as a bedroom apartment work writing- table. A related drawer-fitted table, with flower sprig inlaid in trompe l'oeil beside a book, needlecase, and flute, formed part of the furnishings introduced to Uppark, Sussex around 1770 (photographed in The Saloon in 1910, see C. Rowell, Uppark, National Trust Guide, 1995, p. 59).
