With competition increasing in the 1960s, he was instrumental in reducing production costs whilst modernising the paint finishing process. As the public demanded greater sophistication, automation became the number one priority. Some of the toys were collected from the factory prior to his departure in 1974. He remained in touch with senior management and thus purchased the balance of the toys from the liquidator after the closure of Binns Road.
