JACOBITE RISING, 1715. Three important letters relating to the 1715 rising, comprising:
Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of CARLISLE. Two autograph letters signed ('Carlisle') to Charles, 2nd Viscount Townshend, Preston and Castle Howard, 23 November 1715, REPORTING THE RESULT AND AFTERMATH OF THE BATTLE OF PRESTON, 'The expresse sent yesterday morning by Mr Wills would acquaint your Lordship, that the Rebells have surrender'd at discretion & thrown themselves upon the King's mercy ... Almost all the Roman Catholicks of Northumberland and of this County are now in your power', reporting on the interrogation of Lords Derwentwater and Witherington and proposing clemency for them, 'What do you intend to doo with your Prisoners at Preston? It is said, the forfeited estates will amount to £300,000 per ann[um]', 3 pages, 4to;
[and]
John Erskine, 22nd or 6th Earl of MAR [later Jacobite Duke of Mar]. Document signed ('Mar'), Perth, 5 October 1715, appointing Thomas Forrester [i.e. Thomas Forster (1683-1738)] 'Commander Of all his Majestys forces both horse & foot in the North of England which either are already in his Majestys service Or which shall hereafter joyn you', countersigned by John Paterson, signet seal of Mar on red wax, one page, folio, docketed on verso. Provenance: Maggs Bros, 1912; all three items 'formed part of the Townshend heirlooms recently dispersed' (accompanying letter).

Mar, the hapless commander-in-chief of the 1715, received his Jacobite dukedom on 22 October 1715; the rising however suffered its decisive defeat with the battle of Preston when Forster's forces tamely surrendered after only 42 casualties. Forster's commission was doubtless captured at the battle and sent to Townshend, the secretary of state for the northern department. (3)
