LAWRENCE, Thomas Edward (1888-1935). Autograph letter signed ('TES') to 'Dear Jock' [A.E. Chambers], Southampton, 4 April [19]34, 2 pages, 8vo, endorsement by the recipient on verso of the 2nd leaf (small nicks in outer edge of 2nd leaf, slightly dust- stained on verso).
Encouragement to an old friend to stay at Clouds Hill with his 'camping mate' and describing its spartan comforts. 'I have not seen it for a month ... There are two bags, two rooms, two knives, forks, spoons: he will not inconvenience anybody, and if he likes mixed reading, or old-fashioned gramophone music ... well, there it is'. Lawrence also mentions the pool, hoping that Pat [Knowles] has not emptied it.
'Jock' Chambers was one of Lawrence's younger friends, from his first airforce enlistment at Farnborough where Chambers had been the orderly in Lawrence's hut. In 1933 Chambers visited him several times at Clouds Hill, and they spent Christmas there while Pat Knowles worked at the cottage. During his prolonged absences at Southampton Water, testing speedboats, Lawrence thought (as Chambers notes on the present letter) 'that a friend might be useful'. He stayed there again in April 1935, after Lawrence's retirement from the RAF, and on 13 May Lawrence posted a parcel of books to him from Bovington Camp before embarking on his fateful journey home.
