MONTGOMERY, Bernard Law, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887-1976). Five photographs signed, including three of him in a car, saluting or driving through a town in France, four signed 'Montgomery of Alamein' and one, a full-length portrait in Garter robes, with autograph presentation inscription, 'To James Kirkman from Montgomery of Alamein Field-Marshal', dated 20 April 1948 (310 x 240mm and 240 x 290mm).
The sons of Lt General Sir Sidney Chevalier Kirkman (1895-1982), were held in high regard by Montgomery, who was greatly appreciative of the latter's contribution with 50th Division. Kirkman had been appointed commander of the 56th division in 1941, and soon afterwards was asked by his corps commander, Montgomery, what he thought of the latter's summing-up speech. 'His forthright reply was that the general had omitted two most important lessons; this was to prove the start of a long and close association between the two men, so that Montgomery described Kirkman in his memoirs as the best artilleryman in the British army. Within eighteen months Kirkman was successively appointed Montgomery's artillery commander in 12th corps, south eastern command, and Eighth Army in the western desert.' (ODNB). (5)
