Benedict, who had been Carl Maria von Weber's first pupil, settled in England from 1835, and became something of an institution of British musical life, both as a conductor -- in particular of the Norwich festival and of the Monday Popular Concerts -- and as a composer of operas, songs, cantatas and piano works.
