Cooke, organist and composer, was the son of Dr Benjamin Cooke (1734-1793), succeeding his father as organist of St Martin-in-the-Fields in 1793. He was appointed organist at Westminster Abbey on the death of Samuel Arnold in 1802, a post which he held until his death: he was found drowned in the Thames at Millbank on 22/23 August 1814, and it was assumed that he had taken his own life. One of the first members of the Philharmonic Society, Cooke's religious compositions include an evening service in C (1806) and a collection of chants for daily use in Westminster Abbey. He published a collection of eight glees in 1805, and three of his thirty-three glees won Catch Club prizes.
