The Fairy Caravan was first published by Alexander McKay in Philadelphia: Beatrix Potter did not wish for an English edition since she felt the stories were too personal and autobiographical. However, in order to preserve the British copyright for the work, she ordered 100 copies of the first 9 leaves to be printed by George Middleton, a small local printer in Ambleside. These were sent to America and specially-bound into the 100 copies which constitute the present privately-printed edition. Linder pp.292-305; Quinby 29.
