PRIVATE PRESS BOOKS AND BIBLIOGRAPHY FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE LATE DR LIONEL DAKERS CBE The following 56 lots are from the collection of the late Dr Lionel Dakers CBE (1924-2003), organ master and church musician, who held the positions of Organist, Ripon Cathedral (1954-1957), Organist and Master of the Choristers, Exeter Cathedral (1957-1972), and director of The Royal School of Church Music (1972-1989). A discriminating and informed collector who assembled his library over more than fifty years, Dakers' collecting concentrated on modern literature and fine printing, interests which converged in a fine collection of works by T.E. Lawrence. The books offered here comprise the fine printing and private press books, and are notable for including not only works by the 'classic' private presses such as the Ashendene, Doves, and Essex House presses, but also contemporary presses -- both British and American -- such as the Bird & Bull, Rampant Lions, and Whittington presses. Many of the copies are from the smaller, specially-bound limitations -- for example, many of the Whittington Press books -- or are inscribed or distinguished by provenance; the presentation copy of the Doves Press edition of Shelley's Poems inscribed by Cobden-Sanderson and bound by the Doves Bindery combines both of these elements. The T.E. Lawrence collection -- which includes the 'Subscribers' edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and works by the Golden Cockerel, Corvinus, and Whittington presses -- will be offered at Christie's King Street rooms in the sale of Valuable Printed Books and Manuscripts on 15 November 2006.
