Lot Essay

Thomas Rowlandson executed a version of this view after Nicholson (see H. Mallalieu, Understanding Watercolours, London, 1985, p. 182). Other versions of this composition by Nicholson himself, which differ in the placement of the figures in the foreground, were sold Sotheby's, London, 4 May 1978, lot 137 and 7 July 1983, lot 41.
