8° (168 x 103mm). Contemporary calf, spine tooled in compartments, edges red. Provenance: ?Catherine II (binding) -- Georg Raikovich (tile signature, stamp) -- Paul M. Fekula.

FIRST RUSSIAN EDITION. Probably from the library of Catherine the Great. A fine copy. Printed by Novikov, one of the finest printers of the 18th century, whose eventual arrest for Masonry led to the confiscation of his stock, and the closure of the press. Nougaret wrote comedies, stories and secret histories, which were popular in Russia. Similar bindings are known in the Imperial Library of Catherine II (see lot 8 for a similar binding, also ex-Raikovich, for which Fekula suggests Catherine II as provenance). Drage 466; Fekula 5680 (this copy); Sopikov 5101; SK 4718.
