FIRST RUSSIAN EDITION OF ONE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL WORKS OF NATURAL LAW. This work, much admired by John Locke, argues that civil society is established on a contract between individual wills, with sovereignty in the hands of a benevolent ruler. The translation was commissioned by Peter the Great, who pressed for it swift publication, but was published in the reign of Catherine I, to whom the work is dedicated. 1 of 600 copies only.
