In 1770 the Russian navy under Count Orlov entered the Mediterranean and in July achieved their decisive victory against the Ottomans at Çesme. By the end of the war in 1774 Russia had established her dominance of the Black Sea. Mapmaking done in support of these naval battles contributed significantly to advances in Russian surveying. The first map details the Russian victory over the Turks at Stavuchany in 1739 at the end of the Russo-Turkish War of 1735-39. (9)
