ARMS OF THE TOWNS OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE -- Risunki gerbam gorodov Rossiiskoi Imperii prinadlezhashchie k Imu sobraniiu zakonov. [Drawings of the Arms of the Towns of the Russian Empire appertaining to the Ist Collection of Laws. Lithographed by the Highest Authority]. [St. Petersburg]: Department of Military Settlement, 1843.
Oblong 4° (233 x 292mm). Chromolithographic title heightened with gold, and 114 lithographic plates by K. Hefs, Fr. Wodecki, K. Hess and A. Shurygin, each with between one and six coats of arms, WITH CONTEMPORARY COLOURING in bodycolour heightened with gold and silver and gum arabic, gilt edges. (A few slightly soiled, some tears to tissues guards.) With a 10-page printed index with lithographic plate, in wrappers (slightly browned). Contemporary gilt-stamped green morocco book-form box, the covers with gilt arabesque border, the upper cover centred by the arms of Russia, the spine with title within scrolls, gilt edges, lined with green watered silk (spine head chipped, front joint broken but holding). Provenance: Duke of Leuchtenberg (engraved bookplate).
RARE. A PARTICULARLY FINE EXAMPLE, hand-coloured throughout, of an offical publication made for presentation to members of the Imperial family. This survey of the arms of the towns of the Russian empire complements the first complete publication of all the laws of the Empire published from 1825. Maximilien de Beauharnais, 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg (1817-1852) married Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, daughter of Nicholas I, in 1839. Their children were granted the title Princes Romanovskii after their father's death. Zaionchkovskii 67.
