2 vols., 2° (380 x 270mm). 4 large fold-out maps and 55 plates, of which 10 are chromolithographs and 5 are engraved. Contemporary burgundy hard-grained morocco, inner dentelles gilt, watered silk endpapers, edges gilt. Provenance: Gatchina Palace (stamp).

FIRST EDITION. FROM THE IMPERIAL LIBRARY AT GATCHINA PALACE, Emperor Paul I's favourite retreat on the outskirts of St. Petersburg. Count Bobrinsky served as head of the Imperial Archaeological Commission from 1886 to 1917. His famed collection is now in the Hermitage. The body of the collection is Persian, but it includes fine examples from Dagestan and Central Asia, Syria and Egypt, and some exceptional pieces from Khorasan. (2)
