32 pages on 16 oblong 2° leaves (355 x 225mm), printed rectos only. Woodcut throughout, with 32 vignettes. (First and last leaf repaired in margins, with loss of a very few letters, scattered spotting, light marginal wear.) Disbound, with 3 stab-holes showing. In custom burgundy cloth box.
RARE. A COMPLETE XYLOGRAPHIC BLOCK-BOOK. These popular illustrated publications printed by woodcut were the Russian equivalent of chapbooks. The tale of Eruslan Lazarevich was as important inspiration for the mode of Eastern Exoticism in Russian culture and literature. Dostoevskii is known to have had the text in his library (Nechaeva); and the tale served in part as the basis for Pushkin's long poem 'Ruslan and Lyudmilla'. 'Eruslan Lazarevich' was a very popular Russian version of the Persian Book of Kings. The tale took on many traits of Russian folklore, and was a staple for literate peasants and lower middle-class readers. Nechaeva, Dostoevskii, p.49; Rovinskii, Russkie narodnie kartinki, pp.203-208; see also Terras, Handbook of Russian Literature, p.131.
