LEBEDEV, Vladimir (1891-1967; illustrator) and Samuil MARSHAK (1887-1964). Skazki, pesni, zagadki. [Stories, Plays, Riddles]. Moscow: Academia, 1935.
4° (215 x 175mm). 12 plates, some in colour, and illustrated throughout by Lebedev. Original blue cloth, front cover blocked in colours, illustrated endpapers; original illustrated dust-jacket (spine-head repaired, light soiling and light wear). Provenance: USSR Ministry of Culture export stamp (on rear blank) -- bookplate and book-ticket removed.
VERY RARE FIRST EDITION, IN THE ORIGINAL DUST-JACKET. ONE OF ONLY 5 COPIES KNOWN. Illustrated throughout with Lebedev's wonderful drawings, the publication was swiftly suppressed following a notorious, damning article in Pravda titled 'Slovenly Art'. Sokolnikov, the artistic director of Academia, was able to rescue 50 copies of the book before it suppression. Mikhail Rats notes that he could locate only 4 surviving copies, only one of these in Sokolnikov's collection. The present copy is only the fifth known example of this important collaboration between artist and author. Rats, Staraya Detskaya Knizhka (1997), p. 273.
