Details
FLANDERS and BRABANT - TRAMEZZINO, MICHELE (fl.1539-62).
Flandriae recens exactiq. descriptio. Venice: Michele Tramezzino, 1558. Map of Flanders engraved by Jacob Bos, 415 x 495mm, trimmed with original extended margins. (Some discolouration to centre and upper-centre of map.)

A very rare and important map of Flanders, here in its second state. Tramezzino took the geography from Gerhard Mercator's monumental four-sheet map of Flanders, c.1540, which was the most accurate map of the region, which was itself based on the triangulated surveys of the region by Jacob van Deventer from 1536-39. Deventer produced maps of other Netherlands provinces based on such surveys, but for whatever reason never produced a map of Flanders, and so Mercator's work became the map of record. The present map, with its prominent compass rose, sailing ships and armorial crests, represents the great artistry of Jacob Bos' engraving. Karrow 56/6.1 (variant), watermark of a pilgrim with a cross, not in Woodward:1996

TRAMEZZINO, MICHELE (fl.1539-62).
Brabantia Belgarum provinciae recens exactiqve descriptio. Venice: Michele Tramezzino, 1558. Engraved map of Brabant by Jacob Bos, 520 x 400mm, trimmed with original extended margins (Some places of discolouration on map.)

A fine example of this important map of Brabant in its second state. Based on Deventer's surveys, of which no copies survive, this map is the most accurate map of the region made during the sixteenth-century. Karrow no.25/1.2 (variant), Tooley:1939 no.143, Woodward:1996 watermark 191.
