PORTUGAL - SECO, FERNANDO ALVARES.

Details
PORTUGAL - SECO, FERNANDO ALVARES.
Lusitania. Venice: Michele Tramezzino, 1561. Engraved map of Portugal by Sebastiano di Ré, 355 x 673mm, on a Royal sheet, trimmed with most of original extended margins (Some discolouration to centre and upper centre of map.)

A HIGHLY IMPORTANT AND VERY RARE MAP OF PORTUGAL, THE FIRST SEPARATE MAP OF THE COUNTRY. It was made by Ferdinand Alvares Seco, a mysterious figure, likely of Milanese origin. He dedicated this work to Cardinal Guido Sforza and Aquiles Estacão, a Portuguese humanist resident at the papal court. The virtuosity of Sebastiano di Ré's engraving is evident in this highly-detailed image, beautifully adorned with various Portuguese armorial crests. Seco's highly-accurate work, based on formal surveys, was not superceded for over a century, and was widely emulated, most notably by Ortelius, Gerard de Jode and Matthias Quad. Karrow no.67/1, Tooley:1939 no.456, Woodward:1996 watermark 194
