TWO RARE AND IMPORTANT MAPS OF PIEDMONT AND SAVOY RESPECTIVELY. The first map, of Piedmont, cannot be definitively sourced; however Roberto Almagià attributed it to the Rome workshop of Antonio Lafreri (1512-1577) (Almagià Tav.XVIII). The dramatic topography of the region is captured by the fine engraving, depicting the Alps as they cascade into the fertile northern Italian plain, feeding the tributaries of the Po River. The second map, of Savoy, is by Paolo Forlani, the Veronese cartographer and engraver who worked with several printers including Bertelli. This map is centred on Lake Geneva, and features the upper Rhone Valley in its lower portion. This map, here in the second state, is closely derived from Gilles Boileau de Buillon's seminal work of 1556, which was the first separate map of Savoy and the Franche-Comté.
