Lot Essay

The present composition derives from the engraving that Marcantonio Raimondi based on a design by Raphael in the Ashmolean, Oxford (see P. Joannides, The Drawings of Raphael, Oxford, 1983, p. 165, no. 132v, illustrated). The drawing may have been a first design for the Stanza della Segnatura vault in the Vatican Palace, Rome, to be executed by Il Sodoma but subsequently replaced by Raphael with a different design, executed by himself.
