Further details
Edward Burch produced two similar versions, cf. 'A Descriptive Catalogue of a General Collection of Ancient and Modern Engraved Gems Cameos and Intaglios, Taken from the Most Celebrated Cabinets in Europe; and Cast in Coloured Pastes, white Enamel, and Sulphur', 1791, E.Raspe, (James Tassie) Beazley Archive, Ashmolean Museum Oxford. no 5971,5972. This depiction of Herakles was probably inspired by the Belvedere Torso, (Beazley Archive Sculpture catalogue of casts, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, cat. B128), from a 2nd century original. Cf. Anna Beatriz Chadour, 'The Alice and Louis Koch Collection Vol. II', Leeds, 1994, p. 396, pl. 1266 for similar agate depiction of Herakles and further notes regarding the motif and interpretations
