A LATE 19TH CENTURY STAR SAPPHIRE, DIAMOND AND PEARL PECTORAL CROSS PENDANT
The centre set with an oval cabochon-cut star sapphire within a diamond border, the arms decorated with black champlevé enamel applied with old cushion-cut diamond quatrefoil clusters, the border set with mauve tinted pearls with diamond and white pearl cusp intersections, on a diamond and pearl cluster suspension loop, the reverse with floral engaving, circa 1890, approximately 7.0 cm. long, fitted tooled leather case
Provenance
Originally in the possession of Archbishop Maclagan, Archbishop of York, who died in office in 1908 and was succeeded by Cosmo Lang, then Bishop of Stepney. The Archbishop's widow, Mrs Maclagan, gave it to Lang in memory of her husband. In 1928 Lang was made Archbishop of Canterbury, eventually retiring from office in 1942. Upon Lang's death in 1945, the cross was bequeathed to Bishop Alfred Rose, then Bishop of Dover, and it remained in his family until the present day
