Further details
Lady Charlotte Murray (Charlotte Strange) (1731-1805)
Charlotte Murray was born on 13th October, 1731 and married her cousin John the 3rd Duke of Atholl in 1753. She had seven sons and four daughters and died on the 13th October 1805. She was given the pomegranate ring by her husband probably as a wedding gift. The ring is an unusual example of the 'giardinetti' form and as it may have been commissioned by the family is possibly unique.

Sir John Murray 3rd Duke of Atholl (1729 - 1774)
Born May 1729 he was the eldest son of Lord George Murray. In 1761 he was chosen as MP for Perth and succeeded to the title on the death of his uncle the 2nd Duke of Atholl in 1764. In the same year he was confirmed by the House of Lords.
He married his cousin Charlotte Murray the only surviving child of the 2nd Duke by whom he acquired Sovereignty of the Isle of Man.
In 1765 he commissioned Johann Zoffany to paint a portrait of his wife and family which was completed in 1767 (See front and back cover illustration). In 1768 he was again elected a Scottish representative peer. He died at Dunkeld on 5th November 1774.
