Château Latour--Vintage 1996
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Tasting Note: The Grand Vin First tasted at the château in September 1998. After the delicious '97, it was low-keyed and stern. Very tannic. Only a couple of years later, at the MW tasting of '96s, though deep, it appeared advanced. At first sniff, it seemed very similar to the Lafite-overall I gave it identical marks (18/20). I do no use the 100 pint scale unless my host insists and the context is appropriate. Surprisingly sweet, too. Chewy. Good fruit, very dry finish. But at the Rodenstock blind tasting of '96 first growths I gave it my second highest mark, two points above the average. Lovely colour ; touch of mocha, fragrant; stylish, very good flavour, silky leathery tannic finish. Last tasted March 2001. **** M.B.
