Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1997
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Tasting Note: Cask sample first tasted in September 1998, a small crop 55 selected for the grand vin, the smallest percentage ever. The cèpage mix was Cabernet Sauvignon 77 Merlot 13 Petit Verdot 6 and Cabernet Franc 4 Five weeks macerating, six in wooden vats, only 80 new oak. At this stage still opaque, intense muffled though with crisp Cabernet Sauvignon aroma; surprisingly fleshy, good extract and tannins. Next noted in March 1999, nose like fleshy sawn wood, spice; crisp but peppery at first, opening up gradually; a "lean edge" noted. Most recently: fragrant, crisp, dry finish.(****) M.B.
