Margaux, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Tasting Note: Cabernet Sauvignon 77 Merlot 15 Cabernet Franc 8 and Petit Verdot 8 First tasted from the cask March 1999, still vivid purple, very sweet, fleshy, lovely fruit- softer and sweeter than the '98 though not as concentrated. Next, the opening vintage of Manfred Wagner's vertical in Zurich, November 2000: attractive fruit and oak nose; after three hours positively exotic, full of fruit and oak but well integrated. Most recently at the château, an amazing fragrance; very sweet, chewy but alongside the 2000, a touch of rawness. The '99 was being bottled at the same time of my last visit, 25 June 2001: 200,000 bottles, the grand vin being 40 of the production. Last tasted at the château, March 2001. **** M.B.
