A VERY FINE AND IMPORTANT LOUIS XV JEWELLED VARI-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX
Paris, 1742/1743, with the charge and discharge marks of Louis Robin 1738-1744, a three-lettered maker's mark rubbed, later struck with the third standard mark and the excise mark for gold, French Departments 1809-1819, the excise mark for gold, Paris 1819-1838 and two Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks for gold, and a St. Petersburg mid-19th century mark for imported 18-carat (72 zolotniki) gold items, the plaque inside the cover replaced and the lid probably jewelled by John Linnit (fl. 1809 - after 1844), London, with his trade card inside lid
Shaped rectangular box with slightly bombé sides, the cover embossed and chased with the triumph of Neptune, the sea-god with three sea-horses and a Nereid lower left, a Triton blowing his conch horn and seaweed inlaid with rows of emeralds lower right, the upper centre chased with shells and diamond-set c-scrolls and applied with a large old-cut diamond with radiating wavy rays partly inlaid with rows of diamonds and emeralds, the top right corner also applied with a diamond radiating with jewelled beams depicting a sunrise motif, reeded borders and incorporated jewelled and scrolling thumbpiece, the sides chased with gadrooning and Tritons at the left and right front corners, a rocaille cartouche in the centre flanked by seaweed and various shells, the rear side wall chased with shells, conches and a lobster, the short sides with festoons of shells, the base chased with Neptune disguised as a ram seducing Bisaltis, two putti holding his crown and trident, on a swirling reeded ground framed by c-scrolls; in 19th century hinged green velvet case lined with white silk and blue velvet
