A LOUIS XVI GOLD AND SILVER-GILT MOUNTED IVORY CARNET-DE-BAL SET WITH A MINIATURE
with the discharge mark for very small items of Henry Clavel 1780-1789, later struck with two French import marks for gold 1864-1893
Slightly tapering rectangular ivory étui-à-tablettes of flattened oblong section, the obverse and reverse of the cover applied with pierced gold inscription 'SOUVENIR D'AMITIE' within scroll borders with bow cresting, set with an oval glazed miniature of a lady in lace-bordered light blue dress, pearls in her upswept hair, and on the reverse scrolling foliate pierced gold monogram MV on green silk, beaded gold mounts, the silver-gilt mounted inside with gold-riveted three-leaved tablets and a gold-capped pencil
