The miniature on the cover of the box represents the presentation of the Calydonian boar by Meleager to Atlanta at the end of the Calydonian hunt. The boar had been sent by Diana to ravage the region of Calydon after King Oeneus's omission of Diana in his offering during the annual sacrifices to the gods. During the Calydonian hunt Atlanta wounded the boar and Meleager, son of King Oeneus, killed it. Atlanta was awarded the hide since she had drawn the first drop of blood. The base of the box depicts the arrival of Aeneas in Carthage where he landed after a brief but fierce storm sent up against him at Juno's request. Whilst in Carthage Aeneas married the Carthaginian queen Dido. The left panel shows a hero recumbent on the prow of a ship, with Eros, the son of Venus, firing arrows towards him. Minerva, the virgin goddess, is seen in a cloud above the vessel while Venus is on a dove-drawn chariot with the three graces to her left. On the right panel the miniature depicts the preparation for a feast with nymphs carrying baskets filled with fruit, a shepherd playing a flute and a goat being milked. The front of the box shows a battle scene with a wounded figure being granted clemency by a warrior and the back shows warriors, possibly Achilles and Patrocles, embracing before the walls of Troy while laurels are held aloft. Hercules attends and is identifiable by his attributes, the club and lion skin.
